Sega's blue blur moves as quickly as ever on Nintendo's handheld console and he has a special boost ability that makes you indestructible. The game also harnesses the DS console’s dual-screen setup to simulate a feeling of momentum.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

This was the 14th chapter from The Legend of Zelda franchise and it ranks among the best DS games of all time. Shockingly, this was the 1st Zelda game developed for the NDS console. Fortunately, it was worth waiting for.

Everything about this Zelda game is classic but with a slight twist. From traveling around to crawling in dungeons, and the innovative paraphernalia, each aspect of the game makes good use of the touchscreen controls found on the DS.

3. Dragon Quest 5

Hand of the Heavenly Bride RPG video game was the 5th episode from the Dragon Quest franchise and the 2nd installment from the Zenithian series.

This particular edition was one of the best DS games that provided a remarkable RPG experience on the console. Even back then, when major twists and plot-changing choices were still new concepts, Dragon Quest 5 had lots of them.

4. Radiant Historia

With a 4 out of 5-star user rating, this awesome RPG game deserves a place amongst the best DS games ever made. The 16-bit Radiant Historia NDS game was the perfect blend of great graphics, complex characters, and a politically-motivated war story. The gameplay was backed up by an incredible music score from the renowned Yoko Shimomura of Mario & Luigi and Kingdom Hearts fame.

If featured a 3 grid battle system which allowed for a countless number of flashy combos and strategies, while the time travel-based storyline kept branching out to keep players interested.

5. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

Although Portrait of Ruin might not be one of the best NDS games ever made, on account of a few flaws, it does, however, deliver an overall platform-adventure experience that must not be missed. You can expect to find haunted castles and lots of tormented souls hanging around inside them.

You can swap between 2 heroes. One is Jonathan Morris, an all-round vampire killer and a guy with a whip while the second character is Charlotte his magic-wielding friend. You’re also not restricted to a single castle as you can use demonic paintings as portals to faraway lands.

6. New Super Mario Bros.

Our list of best Nintendo DS games would be incomplete without putting this 2.5D platform game created by Nintendo in the spotlight. This terrific side-scroller was a welcome revisit of Mario’s roots and it lived up to expectations by becoming one of the best-selling game titles from Nintendo.

Here, game levels that initially seemed too straightforward when compared to those from previous editions like Super Mario Bros 3 were revealed to be elegantly planned challenges that still shine with timeless simplicity.

7. Elite Beat Agents

You might be wondering how this memorably bizarre music video game has managed to make it onto our list of best DS games but it was the storyline and its presentation that helped it to stand out.

Three goofy-looking Elite Beat agents were dispatched on each level to clap and dance to catchy music while cheering the needy in society. You’ll find lots of other fun characters such as a weatherwoman on TV looking to spread some sunshine, a little girl wishing for the ghost of her father to return home for Christmas as well as a syringe-wielding nurse.

8. Chrono Trigger

This next entry on our best NDS games listicle was touted as the greatest JRPG of all time during its prime. Chrono Trigger from Square ENIX was the first chapter that started the Chrono franchise.

The plot is spread across several generations and can boast of a grand visual spectacle alongside beautiful character moments. Moreover, the music and 16-bit graphics were some of the greatest from its time.

9. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Apart from ranking among the best games for NDS, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars by Rockstar Games is a top-rated action-adventure game for PlayStation Portable, Android, iOS, and Fire OS devices.

This particular edition was explicitly developed for on-the-go homicide on the DS console. You follow Huang Lee’s story, an entitled and spoiled offspring of a Yakuza lord who gets caught in the middle of a brutal GTA styled tussle for power.

10. Pokemon Black & White

So you want to play the best DS games?! The Pokémon Black & White edition is the 5th chapter from the massively popular Pokémon game franchise. And even though the game series has evolved into the Pokemon Sun & Moon and Pokemon Go titles, Pokémon Black and White still stands out among them on account of its entertaining story and unique monster selection.
